GRADUATE SCHOOL
Design Studies (With Thesis)
Courses
The unique characteristic of the Faculty and the Graduate program, that is, the integration among design fields, is the essence of approach in this seminar course. The approach to design as the all-encompassing concept that unites the thoughts and practices that have to do with the act of organizing and creating the entities around us, is the main content of this seminar course.
The aim of the course is to deliver a complete understanding of the various research methods used in social sciences, and to establish necessary practical skills required for their application. In this course, students will develop a formal research proposal for a master thesis or term project on a topic related to their individual graduate programs, with the supervision of their advisors, to be presented to the academic staff of the related graduate program.
This course consists of generally one group and one individual, two design projects where students undertake design processes that focus on specific aspects of design problems for products, services, or systems ranging from social and public areas to R&D and innovation. Students produce convincing representations of their projects either virtual or real in 2D and 3D with explanations and arguments using advanced presentations.
Supervisors and students together will evaluate previous research on the basis of rules of academic writing and discuss how to apply skills related to critical reading, understanding, synthesizing and contrasting and comparing. Students will work together with an assigned instructor on a selected area in their discipline. Students are also required to write a paper/report in this seminar.
This course is designed to independently conduct a research and acquire the necessary competencies. Accordingly, a proper research question is identified under the guidance of an advisor, an extensive literature review is made, and a unique hypothesis and research design are determined by taking into consideration the methodologies and gaps in the literature. Within the framework of the research design, the relevant data is collected and a thesis including the theoretical basis, method, results and discussion of the research is written.
Elective Courses
FFD 501 Design Research Methodology
In this course, students read articles and chapters from books about design research including the history, key features, ‘research vs. practice’ relations, research positions, theoretical lenses, methodology and methods. Based on these readings they write short essays, make oral presentations, and apply research techniques as Homework, Presentation and Fieldwork course requirements. In addition, they carry on their Projects also as a course requirement, in which they make research on their own thesis topics.
FFD 502 Current Topics in Art and Design
The course focuses on the design discourses of 20th century modern world to understand the bases of today's contemporary approaches. Almost each topic is discussed through the center periphery theory so as to see the continuities and discontinuities between the design approaches and historical periods not only in the center but also in the periphery.
FFD 503 Design Representation Theories
This course explores the relationship between design, and contemporary cultural discourses including modernism, postmodernism, (post)structuralist theory, postcolonial positions.
FFD 507 Design Project Research
Preliminary work on the graduation thesis to determine its method, scope, aim and sources by means of individual meetings between the students and their thesis advisors.
FFD 509 Ethics and Social Responsibility in Design
The course covers a variety of readings of academic articles, discussions and presentations , film screening , seminars regarding to understanding of ethics, sustainability, environmental issues and activist movements related to different design disciplines . At the end of the course the students will be asked to develop an activist design project, write and present a manifesto which they will develop upon as an alternative solution to propose a more ethical and sustainable future for design.
FFD 510 Individual Study
The course allows students to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research or a creative project inclusive of a written work to describe the process and support its goals. The final outcome represents a commitment to research, critical thinking, and an informed viewpoint by the student. \\nThe course is arranged around a set of questions and methodologies, and develops from abstract to concrete ways in order to accommodate specific requirements for each student’s thesis/project. It consists of three phases: the first introduces key issues and concentrates on practical questions related to the ‘how’s’ (methodologies) in research making, academic reading and writing, and creative processes. The second part deals with developing theoretical and analytical skills for crafting a thesis/project research question, and the final phase involves an oral presentation and the production of the thesis proposal or creative project supported by a text.
FFD 511 Research Methodology
This course aims at developing research experience of the student and discusses the notion and methods of qualitative and quantitative research in design. Essentials of planning and conducting research will be discussed. Guidelines for academic research paper writing will be provided.
FFD 512 Narrative Design and Practices in Photography
This course focuses on narrative design and practices in photography by putting an emphasis on theoretical background and contemporary practices.
FFD 513 Discourses of Design and Architecture in the 20th Century
The course focuses on the design discourses of 20th century modern world to understand the bases of today's contemporary approaches. Almost each topic is discussed through the center periphery theory so as to see the continuities and discontinuities between the design approaches and historical periods not only in the center but also in the periphery.
FFD 514 Design and Domestic Culture
This interdisciplinary course comprises of readings and discussions on critical theories of domesticity and design, regarding different decades and geographies.
FFD 515 Discussions on Public Space: Design and Theory
This course is structured on the readings and discussions regarding three main focuses on theories and experiences of public space, equity and access issues, and design and management of public spaces.
FFD 551 Spatial Practices
Readings and discussions on critical spatial theories and the reading of a particular urban or architectural space based on these discussions.
FFD 555 Imaginary and Futuristic Design Studies
In this course the students will introduce original design ideas and ideologies on futuristic life possibilities and environments by conducting reading, criticism and discussions on art, philosophy, science and conceptual design theories and practice.
FFD 557 Ecological and Bio-climatical Design
The course analyzes, discusses and researches the eco system, ecological construction methods, bioclimatic design, environmental problems and pollution including air pollution, water pollution, solid wastes and noise pollution. Additionally, the course guides towards an investigation of ecological principles in human relationships, and the interaction with the environment.
FFD 563 Art, Design and City
To understand the discourses on the relationship between art, design and the city since modernism and to analyze a given urban space based on these.
FFD 566 Trend Catalogue Project
In this course students define the current issues based on an autonomous research by using sources upon contemporary art and design. Based on this analysis and observation they conceptualize and visualize the future tendencies which can be utilized via the various sectors in the fashion industry.
FFD 568 Looking into The Past in Contemporary Fashion
A conceptual survey on visual world of social climate, artistic styles, designers, fashion items and their users in order to interpret historical influences on contemporary fashion
FFD 569 Advanced Materials in Design
Review of advanced materials and related opportunities for design. Innovative materials\napplications in design and related case studies. Examples of cutting edge research in\nmaterials technology and their connections with design.
FFD 571 Literary Spaces
The course is structured around readings and discussions with an emphasis on literary descriptions of space to provide an understanding of spatial experience and a critical interpretation of spatial research and design through literary tools.
FFD 572 Creativity and Design Management
This course explores the relationship between design, creativity and design management.
