NEW METHODS IN YACHT DESIGN
Yacht design is being reshaped in the hands of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) students. Students of IUE Graduate School of Social Sciences-Yacht Design Master’s Program and IUE Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design learn about boat construction on-site and get ready for new generation of boats.
Students learned about materials used at catamaran and details at their technical trip to Antalya Free Zone and Setur Marina. Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Ergül, Lecturer at IUE Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, who gave information about latest yacht designs, stated that boat owners’ demands increased as they gained experience and they wanted bigger boats. He said, “Among their demands are comfort and cosiness. The performance demand increases along with spatial size and additional equipment. If we were to think that a wave gap in Mediterranean Sea is 12 metres on the average, the movement of an 8 - 10 metre long sailboat would not be that comfy. A boat with less sailing capacity and large keel sailing under a low weather is sultry. Therefore, sailors look for a faster and more comfortable one.”
‘A rough outer space, a cosy inner space’
Asst. Prof. Dr. Ergül indicated that the designers were in search of new solutions to make a more efficient interior for boats. He said:
“The purpose is not to obtain a maximum efficiency. A spacy, comfortable, and cosy interior is also very significant. Among the outstanding characteristics of boat design are to create continuous, less divided spaces, use light colour sheathing, and to lighten up all the dark corners with hidden led lights. However rough it may look from the outside, the interior is thought to be a refuge. Outside is the place for daylight and wind, whereas inside is for night and tranquility.”
