Frequently Asked Questions
Applicants must hold a relevant undergraduate degree and achieve the minimum score determined by the Senate in the ALES or an equivalent exam for the program they are applying to. Additional requirements may include a minimum undergraduate GPA, foreign language proficiency, an interview, and/or a written scientific exam, depending on the specific program.
No. ALES is not mandatory for master's programs without thesis. Admissions are based on criteria such as undergraduate GPA and interview performance.
Applicants must hold either a master's program with thesis or an undergraduate degree, meet the required ALES or equivalent score, and achieve the minimum score in a foreign language exam recognized by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). They must also successfully complete additional requirements such as interviews and/or written scientific exam.
The scientific preparatory program is designed for students who have been admitted to a master's or Ph.D. program but have completed their previous education in a different field or lack sufficient academic background. The aim of this program is to ensure the student's academic alignment and competence.
The primary language of instruction is English. However, some programs may be conducted in Turkish.
Students can apply to defer their registration due to valid and documented reasons such as health, military service, or family matters. If approved by the Graduate School Administrative Board, registration can be deferred for up to two semesters.
Students must complete a minimum of 21 IUE credits and 120 ECTS, successfully pass the seminar and thesis, and have a GPA of at least 3.00. The thesis must be defended with the jury, and all submission procedures must be completed.
Yes. Students transferred from master's programs without thesis to master's programs with thesis if they meet the relevant application requirements. Course equivalency is evaluated by the Graduate School Administrative Board.
Yes. Up to two equivalent courses from other universities can be taken with the recommendation of the Division and the approval of the Administrative Board. Their credit and grade equivalence are evaluated by the Graduate School.
The diploma includes the official program name approved by YÖK. A diploma supplement is also provided to ensure international recognition.
Yes. Students can transfer from domestic or international universities or from other IUE graduate programs. The conditions, quotas, and equivalency are determined by the Senate.
Students who successfully complete the thesis defense must obtain formatting approval from the Graduate School and submit signed hard copies and digital versions within one month after the thesis defense date. This process may be extended by a maximum of one month upon decision of the Graduate School Administrative Board. Failure to meet these obligations on time results in ineligibility for graduation and loss of student rights.
Advisors are appointed by the end of the first semester in master's programs with thesis, and by the end of the second semester in PhD programs. Appointments are made based on recommendation of the Division and approval of the Graduate School Administrative Board.
This status is granted to students enrolled in another graduate program at a higher education institution who wish to take courses at IUE. Registration is subject to approval of the division and fulfillment of financial obligations. This status does not entitle the student to a diploma.
Students who do not complete course registration are considered "inactive." Inactive students cannot participate in academic activities or benefit from student rights. Inactive semesters still count toward the maximum time allowed for graduation.
Students must complete a term project to graduate from master's programs without thesis. Although the project course is non-credit, enrollment is mandatory. The project is supervised by an advisor.
The qualifying exam consists of written and oral parts. Candidates scoring 80 or above on the written exam are allowed to proceed to the oral part. Students must meet the minimum passing criteria in both. Failure in the exam twice results in dismissal from the PhD program.
Yes. Students may withdraw from up to two courses with advisor approval within the academic calendar's timeframe. However, withdrawal from required or repeated courses is not allowed.
The thesis advisor uses plagiarism detection software to generate a similarity report. This rate must be below the threshold set by the Senate. Otherwise, the thesis cannot proceed to defense.
The maximum duration is six semesters for master's programs with thesis; three semesters for master's programs without thesis; twelve semesters for PhD programs (with a master's degree), and fourteen semesters for PhD programs (with a bachelor's degree). Preparatory and scientific preparation semesters are excluded.
