Course Objectives This course aims at encouraging the student to think and produce ideas upon social responsibility of design and ethics; discusses on the position and responsibility of the designer on threefold concepts of mankind, nature and design. In addition , the course provides the student with academic background in order to equip them with a required maturity in sustainability and universal design issues.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • will be able to describe the concept of ethics and sustainability in design.
  • will be able to discuss the notion of responsibility in regards to social aspect of design.
  • will be able to analyze and compare an understanding of ecological, sustainable, universal design as well as gender design, cross-cultural design, activist design, circular and collaborative design
  • will be able to generate conceptual design response against various global crises which may occur due to natural disasters, climate and health crises, economic failures, social inequalities
  • will be able to describe, classify and write manifestoes
Course Description The course covers a variety of readings of academic articles, discussions and presentations , film screening , seminars regarding to understanding of ethics, sustainability, environmental issues and activist movements related to different design disciplines . At the end of the course the students will be asked to develop an activist design project, write and present a manifesto which they will develop upon as an alternative solution to propose a more ethical and sustainable future for design.
